Who: Jermichael Finley + Finley Fitness in Aledo, TX
When people think of Texas, there’s a good chance that along with BBQ, longhorns and cowboy boots, the term “football” comes to mind. That’s why when we learned about what former University of Texas and NFL Packers tight end Jermichael Finley was doing with his new facility in Aledo, TX, we had to see what it was all about.
But first, a little context. Jermichael Finley grew up in the small town of Diboll in East Texas. Following high school, he went on to play at the University of Texas, deciding to forgo his junior and senior seasons to play in the NFL. He was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft. Although he would eventually suffer a serious neck and head injury that led to his retirement, he was in attendance when the Packers took the Super Bowl XLV win over the Pittsburgh Steelers (2011).
Following retirement, Jermichael, his wife and children decided to put roots down in Aledo, TX (just a 20 minute drive from the heart of Fort Worth). Since then, he’s built a state-of-the-art training facility targeted at getting athletes to the next level.
What: Next Level Training for Athletes (and even us non-athletes) by a Former NFL Player
When we first arrived at the facility, Jermichael and his staff were running middle and high schoolers through a series of football-specific drills. Keep in mind, while it was pushing almost 102 degrees outside, part of the field is indoor with the option to open it up, so the kids’ parents could hang out and watch while football stars of the future also got some periodic relief from the sun, too.
While there’s no doubt that Jermichael’s passion is driven by providing young athletes with access to training, he also puts on programs for those of us “non-athletes”, too (think bootcamp-style workouts).
Why: Giving Back to Kids with a Dream + Us Football-Loving Texans
During our interview with him, Jermichael stressed that he’s motivated by giving back to the community. Having grown up in a small town with little to no resources like what he’s offering to players now, he’s on a mission to change that for players in and around Aledo.
“I’m a guy of giving back. It’s real tough for me to take when I see kids out here who need training and guidance. I’m here trying to help the kids make the most out of what they got.”
It’s evident from having spent some time at the facility that Jermichael’s providing an environment where kids with a dream to one day play football in college (or even the NFL) can come and train in a legit (and most certainly #noteworthy) facility with someone who’s been there before.
